Yammer, the Enterprise 2.0 collaboration tool, introduced a new version of its desktop application this week called Yammer Desktop 2.0.

In a blog post, Yammer wrote that it had heard from its users and made these enhancements based on end-user feedback. Among the changes are threaded conversations, so that you can follow all of the activity on a related conversation more easily.

The new version also features direct messaging capability, which lets you send a message privately to one or more colleagues. This is particularly useful when you are collaborating and you don't want to share your thread with the entire organization.

There is also a new tagging capability to help you track the types of information you are sharing in the enterprise as well as a document viewer, which makes it easy to see the contents of a document without having to open the associated application. This could be useful for a quick look where editing and detailed commenting aren't required.

In addition, there is a new Notifications tab where you can monitor all of the content related to you such as new @mentions or direct messages.

These new features should go a long way toward making Yammer a more useful tool for sharing and collaborating in the enterprise.

The new version is available immediately for download from the Yammer website. It will be rolled out to existing users over the next couple of weeks.
