I recently spoke to Greg Lloyd at Traction Software and Sid Probstein from Attivio and they told me about a partnership they have formed to bring Attivio search to Traction's social platform. Attivio's strength is traditional indexing combined with database functionality. This enables them to run fast checks against the information and make sure the person searching has proper security clearance.

Probstein, who is CTO at Attivio, believes that this security component is key. "Being able to find [social information] is important, but it's very important that the findability be informed by security and provisioning model," he says. He has found Traction to be a positive partner. "Traction is a company that we have gotten to know, and we find they are remarkable and focused around through collaboration through blogging."

This is an interesting partnership because, as I've written here before, Enteprise 2.0 collaboration technology has the potential to be an organic knowledge management engine. If you ask someone to fill out a trip report or a form about what they know, they are going to be reluctant to do it, whereas a tool like Traction captures this information as part of the every day interactions that is a natural part of using a tool like Traction's without any extra effort.

By tying a search tool to a security model, it means that only those employees who are supposed to see the information will see it. It gives you the power of collaboration and enterprise-class search along with security.
