SpringCM 5.4 release improves records management

SpringCM, the software as a service content management vendor, announced the release of version 5.4 this week. Like most interim releases, there are no stunning new features, but the latest version does include improved records management capabilities for organizations looking for this type of functionality.

Outgoing VP of marketing Chris Ryan admits this might not be the type of records management capability a professional records manager needs, but for organizations looking for basic records management functionality, it gives you what you need. "It's designed to help people who are not sophisticated records managers," he said. He added that the vast majority of workers create records by their actions in their daily jobs, but don't want to be records managers. This gives them the capability they need.

Among the new record keeping features is the ability to set a record retention schedule based on an actual date field, rather than the date the record was created. This could come in handy, for instance, for HR, which needs to base its records on the actual hire date, not the date the records were added to the system.

Other new features in this release include improved dashboard capability and new cloning capabilities. The latter should help VARs and ISVs clone individual pieces in the SpringCM platform such as workflows, reports or metadata models to build on existing components. SpringCM CEO Dan Carmel summed it up nicely when he said "Version 5.4 of the SpringCM platform enhances our support for compliance and records management, gives customers new ways to gain insights into content-centric processes and enables partners to better develop, enhance and deploy applications built on the SpringCM platform."
