Spotlight: One government website to rule them all

Current estimates peg the number of federal websites at around 24,000, but outgoing Federal Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra said during a July 14 House hearing that USA.gov should be the single online platform for the entire federal government. The White House launched an effort June 14 to reduce the number of federal websites.

"The idea is that for an average American person, they shouldn't have to navigate the federal bureaucracy to figure out what services they want. They should be able to go onto USA.gov search," said Kundra while testifying before a House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee.

Just days before his testimony, Sheila Campbell, head of GSA's web best practices team, cautioned that "the jury is still out" on whether a single government site would solve problems with federal website management that have arisen in the past few years. Read more at FierceGovernmentIT.
