SDL Tridion adds Site Editor 2009

SDL Tridion introduced a new tool this week that lets end users edit their website content without having to go through a central department (like marketing or IT) to get it done. The tool has been designed to help organizations deal with large, complex websites and better coordinate site editing by enabling individuals to update sites themselves while adhering to corporate standards.

A couple of weeks ago we interviewed Lisa Welchman of WelchmanPierppoint and she talked about the problems larger web sites have coordinating changes:

"Large websites usually mean a lot of cooks in the web kitchen whether they are internal web contributors or external vendors creating content and data to support the site. Is this web development effort coordinated? For truly large websites, an uncoordinated web team will almost inevitably mean serious content management problems and lowered site quality."

Jan Jaap Kolleman, CEO of SDL Tridion says this tool is meant to address the very type of problem that Welchman alluded to. "Editing is done in-context without having to learn any new systems or have any knowledge of HTML. If a user can browse a website and use a word processor, then they can use SiteEdit 2009 to update the website. It is important in large organizations to empower content owners. This makes the whole team more productive and allows for scalability as their online presence grows and website becomes more strategic.”

A tool like SiteEditor 2009 is not exactly ground-breaking, but it is absolutely essential to provide end users with the ability to edit their own content pages without having to wait for a central department to do it. If end user empowerment is a central tenet of Enterprise 2.0, then this type of tool will help put the power in the hands of end users, while giving the site designers and owners confidence that users will adhere to site design, corporate and brand standards.
