Rolling your own CMS

Just five years ago, many people's response to needing a content management system was to build their own. Companies small and large each had a custom, proprietary program that they built and maintained for the purpose of keeping their digital content in line and presenting it as desired.

Today there are so many open source and commercial CMS options that few bother building one from scratch anymore. However, some projects require so much customization that rolling your own starts to sound good.

If your coders are familiar with the Python programming language, then one option is to use the Zope Content Management Framework. The Framework is a set of components commonly used in building a CMS. These components sit on top of the Zope application server, which is a free, open source web application server.

While the majority of web CMS projects today run on PHP, popular solutions such as Plone are built on both Python and Zope.
