A quick look at WordPress 3.0

By now you are probably aware, WordPress 3.0, aka Thelonius (after the great jazz musician Thelonius Monk) has been officially released. I use WordPress on my socmedia101.com blog, so I bravely clicked the upgrade button and in about half a minute I had the new version installed. One of the nicer new features is the ability to upgrade all of your plug-ins at one time by checking the ones you want and selecting Upgrade from a drop-down list.

Everything upgraded smoothly with the exception of a couple of plug-ins, which reset to their defaults (a bit of a pain). I was able to reconfigure one of them and I simply disabled the other one because I don't think we had been using it and it was flashing a big, red error message at the top of the administrative interface.

I use a custom version of the Thesis theme for my blog, but for those using the default theme, the new "Twenty Ten" default theme is much nicer than the previous one. WordPress has made a lot of nice changes under the hood that makes it easier to add new pages and new sections and in general make it behave much more like a website than a blog (which are where it roots lie). What's more, WordPress has made it easier to manage multiple sites from a single interface, which should please those people who had to get a separate multi-user version previously to achieve this.

For a nice overview of the new features, see the video below:
