Open Text expanding social offerings

Open Text announced this week that it was expanding its social offerings in the enterprise. These tools, often referred to as Enterprise 2.0 software, provide a way to get Facebook- and Twitter-type functionality inside the safety and security of the firewall, where employees can share information and collaborate freely.

James Latham, Chief Marketing Officer at Open Text says open web social tools have lead more employees to want to collaborate in this fashion. "With its more than 500 million members, Facebook, along with social sites like Wikipedia and Twitter, have brought social media into the mainstream," Latham said.

Latham says it's more than just easier collaboration though. He says, it's about actual business benefits. "We are focused on helping customers realize practical and measurable business benefits such as faster time to market, higher customer retention or greater team productivity, while helping to reduce compliance, security and privacy risks."

Among the new offerings are free download of Pulse, a Facebook-style collaboration tool. This will be available for free to existing Open Text customers. They are also releasing a new version Open Text Workplace and Open Text Communities (which was previously a Vignette product called Vignette Community Applications and Services).
