Nuxeo joins the case management parade

Nuxeo joined the case management parade this week when it announced a new product they are calling Nuxeo Case Management Framework (Nuxeo CMF). This announcement comes on the heels of similar announcements from EMC and IBM just last month. Nuxeo appears to be the first open source vendor to offer this option.

The Nuxeo tool includes a set of tools and templates along with samples and documentation designed to help developers build custom applications on top of the Nuxeo Enterprise Platform (Nuxeo EP).

Lee Dallas, writing in an Industry Voices guest column earlier this month called "From content to cases," wrote that he saw the current incarnations of case management "as campaigns rather than products at this point because in most cases the initial launches were not net new products. The case management approach by these mega players for the most part begins with recasting a subset of their existing portfolio or configurations as a case management toolkit or platform."

Cheryl McKinnon, chief marketing officer at Nuxeo, confirms that their package is a similar type of bundle of existing products with some new extras.

What these tools all do is move business process into the spotlight and for many verticals such as insurance and healthcare, this can work very well as ISVs and other developers build applications suited to a particular task or set of tasks on top of the Nuxeo content repository. What's more, by taking advantage of CMIS, a standard adopted by Nuxeo and other content management vendors, the solutions do not have to be limited to the Nuxeo repository, but can grab content from a variety of content repositories.

It may not be new. As Cheryl McKinnon, tweeted this morning, "There is nothing new under the sun," but by using Open Source combined with CMIS, it does present Nuxeo's unique twist on the approach.
