Nuxeo announced, this week, that it will be releasing a beta of a new cloud-based version of its document management product. The product is built on top of Amazon's infrastructure and provides a way to run Nuxeo services in the cloud, as well as to build services on top of the Nuxeo platform. This ability to build applications also extends to the installed version of the product.

Eric Barroca, CEO at Nuxeo, which is an open source enterprise content management system, says the ability for companies and third parties to build applications on top of the platform provides an edge because businesses today want packaged solutions. "What we are seeing is more and more customers want to solve business problems," he says. Barroca adds, "They don't want a big framework. They want to buy a solution."

In addition, the new cloud solution takes a unique approach by offering customers the ability to have a backup of all the content stored behind the firewall onsite. So in addition to operating in the cloud, it gives those customers that need it the comfort of knowing they can always get back up and running even if the service goes down.

"This makes customers more confident if there is a problem with the SaaS provider, they always have a local backup they can restore," He adds that it's important for some customers to have a disaster recovery plan that enables you to recover if the service goes down for any reason.

It's an interesting approach, when combined with the fact that it's open source and provides the platform to build content-centric applications, it could give Nuxeo an edge in an increasingly competitive ECM space.
