Newsgator and Yammer get video
If you're looking for the next Enterprise 2.0 trend, look no further than the announcements from E20 vendors Newsgator and Yammer less than a week apart, that they are each adding video (or so-called YouTube for the enterprise) to each of their product sets.
To be fair, Newsgator beat Yammer to the announcement by coming out with their announcement last week, ahead of the holiday weekend in the United States. Newsgator called it the first social video solution, but it's really not, especially with the Yammer announcement right on its heels. And I was hearing about video at Enterprise 2.0 in Santa Clara last fall.
That said, it's a tool for sharing video in the Newsgator online community. Newsgator is an Enterprise 2.0 suite of tools that includes all of the tools you would expect in such a package, such as social streams, micro-blogging, online communities and so forth. Newsgator is geared toward being a social front end for SharePoint.
The Newsgator solution provides real streaming and plays up to 1080p quality.
Meanwhile Yammer was coming up with a similar product and announced it this week that lets users share video in the Yammer online community, which includes a similar toolset to Newsgator, but without a direct SharePoint connection. The Yammer video solution provides what it calls an in-line video player, meaning it plays the video right in the stream, rather than opening as a separate tool or window.
Yammer's video player is HTML 5 compatible and plays in a browser or iOS devices.
Both of these tools are an attempt by vendors to add as much social functionality as possible to their product sets.
