New version of Glide coming with new interface
Glide OS, which for years has run as a Web OS, is taking a different approach with the upcoming release. In prior versions, users had to go to the Glide OS web site to access Glide features. In the new version, you'll still be able to do that, but you can also use a browser plug-in that gives you access to almost all of the Glide functionality directly from the browser without having to go to a separate site.
Glide's strength has always been its ability to handle any file types and to work across platforms and operating systems. Now, you can use Glide as a layer on top of your web browser to capture and share files and information, and, according to Transmedia CEO Donald Leka, transform the web into your personal hard drive by allowing you to store, use and collaborate using the information you capture and create on the web.
"To access Glide, there is no required web destination and there are no restrictions on what browsers can be used or what sites can be visited," Leka said. "The all new Glide extends your file management system beyond your local and online desktops to the web itself, beyond the limitation of a particular device, browser or even a specific search portal, social network or other website."
What's more, Glide's granular rights-based system enables document owners to control just who can see their content, how long they can use it and if they can share it. It works across all major browsers including Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari and Chrome. The OS includes an office-style suite of business productivity tools that are fully compatible with Microsoft Office.
I've watched Glide since 1.0. The first release was innovative, but funky. It was hard to find your way around. In later versions, Transmedia greatly improved the user experience, but this new version takes usability to a new level. It's a clean interface that anyone with any computer experience should understand easily.
The update will be available on December 7th.
