New data suggests Google search in a league of its own
Bing has been a good story throughout 2009 and it's helped raise Microsoft's reputation a bit, but a recent look at the numbers by Comscore in November suggests that, even though folks like to think Bing is a player, they are ultimately still so far behind Google, they are just fighting for second place. In fact, one writer on CIO Today suggests that Google is like Secretariat, the legendary horse, who in 1973 won horse racing's Triple Crown by simply blowing away the entire field.
Like those races back then, the real race today is for second place, and with that, Yahoo! is slipping. This means that while everything indicates that Bing gained some share this year, although a very small amount in the scheme of things, it continues to draw market share away from its future partner, Yahoo!, rather than from its supposed rival, Google.
Bing has a lot of good features going for it. It has clearly made Google think about its interface more with its own clean design and it has set up some semblance of competition in the search market. This is all good ultimately for consumers. More recently, Microsoft even created a Bing app for the iPhone. As Google delves deeper into mobile computing, Microsoft and Apple could work more closely, which only goes to prove that politics and business make for strange bedfellows.
In this case with Google so far ahead in search, perhaps Apple might get involved to help ensure its own dominant position in the mobile space. It's all about positioning and these organizations are looking to make moves that will best serve the interests of their organizations, no matter who may be the potential partner.
