New Alfresco release focuses on records management and mobile

The folks at Alfresco, the open source enterprise content management vendor, have clearly been paying attention. Two things that are on the minds of folks who manage content is how to get the records management side of the business under control for compliance and eDiscovery purposes and how to access the content repository from mobile devices.

Alfresco Community Version 3.2, which was released this week, takes care of both these issues with enhanced records management features that they say will prepare your company (should you require it) for new US Department of Defense record keeping rules that may take effect in September.

The latest release also gives end users access to the content repository from their mobile phones, including the popular Apple iPhone. The applications has been designed specifically with a mobile footprint in mind to give users easy access to view, edit or search content from a mobile device.

Alfresco CTO John Newton says this mobile piece lets users access the repository from wherever they happen to be. "With Alfresco’s new Smartphone client, users can take their work with them, and they are no longer tied to their desks," said Newton.

Whether 24-hour access to work content is a good thing depends on your perspective, but this provides an easy way to stay connected on the road and this, combined with other new features, gives customers a solid open-source offering when considering an ECM system.
