Limelight providing HTML5 support for iPad

Limelight Networks, which provides on-demand managed infrastructure solutions for the web and caters to the rich-media publishing crowd, recently announced it will support multimedia content for the Apple iPad. The updated support encodes media properly for tablet displays, and delivers it over the appropriate protocol to the device. Content will play through HTML5-capable browsers and through iPad apps such as widgets or media players.

This news comes on the heels of Brightcove's announcement that it will provide support for HTML5 video. In the announcement, Brightcove touted customers, such as the New York Times and Time, Inc., that are working to create content for the iPad. The Brightcove and Limelight updates launched automatically on Saturday, the first day of the device's availability, to ensure end-users would be able to view properly formatted media as soon as they walked out of their local Apple Store.

Last week, Jeremy Allaire, Brightcove chairman and chief executive officer, said the new support will ensure that quality, interactivity and monetization capabilities won't fall by the wayside just because a new device has debuted. The support for "HTML5 fills the gap between the current playback capabilities of the emerging standard and what our customers need to operate successful online video businesses," said Allaire.
