How do you choose a CMS?

When evaluating the bidders on an RFP, or directly evaluating CMS products, how do you arrive at your decisions? If you've been talked into taking your requirements and using them to build an elaborate scorecard, Janus Boye at J. Boye Vendor Neutral suggests rethinking that strategy.

Not only do scoring systems have the issue of determining how you score the more subjective criteria such as usability, being committed to selecting the solution with the highest score can actually cause problems. What if the highest scored offering happens to be missing a feature you needed? Or how do you break the ties if a number of options receive a similar score?

Rather than trying to score on every tiny detail, Boye recommends creating a table listing the vendors or projects, and then your requirements. Then fill in the cells with how well each offering meets each requirement. You'll be able to make a much more informed decision and save a huge amount of time that you would have otherwise spent deciding how many points each tiny feature was worth.
