It's been said that SharePoint is the Lotus Notes of the 21st Century. Lotus Notes was a popular way of sharing content in the 1990s, but there are still plenty of organizations using it for email. A new product from Harmon.ie, lets these companies embed SharePoint content in a sidebar in Lotus Notes.

In fact, Harmon.ie reports that there are actually companies using both of these mega products and they have been looking for ways to provide access to SharePoint content inside of Lotus Notes. This product is a God-send for them. Chen Zuo, Project Manager for Zurich-based ABB said that with 124,000 worldwide users, there was no easy way to combine SharePoint and Lotus Notes until Harmon.ie.

"With harmon.ie bringing SharePoint functionality into email, we achieved significant use of our new tools, creation of 2,400 online team sites, and improved dialogue within and beyond teams in just the first 12 months," Zuo said.

Harmon.ie, which also provides similar functionality inside of Outlook is trying to provide a way for users to access SharePoint content from inside their email programs, which as we've written, remains a key tool for many workers in spite of its limitations.

The idea of using both Lotus Notes and SharePoint makes my head hurt a bit, but for companies that are taking that step, Harmon.ie could be the tool they need to build a bridge between these two complex products.
