Google adds drag and drop file functionality to Google Docs

Last week while we were all getting ready for Thanksgiving Break, Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) introduced a nifty new feature to Google Docs that enables you to drag and drop files from your desktop into Google Docs. The interface is a bit clunky, but in testing it worked just fine.

The way it works is you click the Upload button on Google Docs home page and this screen appears (click thumbnail to the left to enlarge image).

You open up your file management program and drag the file or files you want to the area marked "Drag and drop files here." In testing it worked as advertised uploading a 1.27 MB PDF. There are options to convert documents to Google Docs formats, but there are severe file size limitations with a 500 KB limit for PDFs and just 1024 MB for other documents. Google needs to do better than that, but I'm sure these limits will increase over time.

This slick little feature that brings desktop-type functionality to the cloud is further blurring the lines between the two.
