Glide launches cloud storage with 30GB of free storage
Transmedia, makers of the online Glide operating system introduced a new service this week called Glide G Drive with 30GB of free storage, offering far more than similar freemium online storage vendors such as Dropbox and Box.net, which each offer 5GB.
While Dropbox is a pure online storage service, and Box offers additional collaboration services, Glide is a complete set of services including an online word processor, spreadsheet, photo editing, music player and online hard drive. It also provides the ability to make a post public or private, and privacy is the default. In addition, you can place granular security controls on each folder letting any number of people view it or not as you choose.
What's more, Glide offers automatic file identification, taking the complexity out of sharing and storing files and it works across many of the most popular computer, tablet and smart phone platforms on the market including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Android, Android Honeycomb, BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry Tablet OS (QNX), iOS, webOS, Symbian and Windows Mobile.
What's truly powerful about Glide online storage is the ability to create folders with content that you can then publish to a web page with a single click and get a URL which you can share with friends by email or on social networks. This would be a good way to share documents or photos for instance.
Transmedia chairman and CEO Donald Leka sees this as a big differentiator between his service and other online storage offerings. "Glide GDrive's breakthrough one-tap multi-stream publishing removes limitations on file types and on how many streams and feeds users can publish expanding the possibilities of publishing content online."
While I was somewhat confused about how to use the publish feature at first, once I understood how the process worked, it was very simple.
You can sign up for the new Glide service at glidelife.com and you will get 30 GB of free online storage. The website will walk you through the process of installing the browser plug-in for your browser and downloading the desktop sync software for your operating system.
