In a recent report, information technology research and advisory company Gartner encourages companies to set their sites on 'Generation Virtual' (or 'Generation V'). This coinage describes not an age group, but rather a class of people who have a preference for the use of digital media channels to discover information, build knowledge and share insights. Within Generation V, according to Gartner, are levels of involvement in digital technology, including creators, contributors, opportunists, and lurkers. (The categories loosely adhere to the 90:9:1 model of technology adoption.) Gartner says that organizations can target their products at members of this generation by providing socialization tools to customers and prospects that are tailored to their level of online engagement.
