An important element of content management is translation management. Most companies have to translate content and many use a translation management system (TMS) that works in conjunction with their CMS. That's why it's big news that Welocalize has announced that the GlobalSight Translation Management System will be released next month on January 5th and will be the world's first open source TMS. It uses Clay Tablet 2.0 to connect to multiple content repositories. Welocalize says, "This approach ensures "out of the box" connectivity to a wide range of CMS' and integration possibilities with most others."
Welocalize has transitioned to open source in its latest development cycle by replacing several third-party software components with open source equivalents. The company recognized that it would be impossible for it to provide all the enhancements customers need, so by moving to an open source model, it can lean on its community of users to help create add-ons.
GlobalSight recently went into Beta release with its steering committee members: AOL, Autodesk, Salesforce.com and Sun Microsystems, and four Language Service Providers (LSPs): Afghan Translation Service, Applied Language Solutions, Lloyd International Translations and VistaTEC. This is exciting news because it provides an open source alternative in an area where one hadn't previously existed and gives CMS owners a choice on how to handle translation management.
