Federal CIO takes inventory, aims to consolidate websites
According to a new report (.pdf), the federal government has a whopping 1,489 domains across its executive departments and agencies. Federal Chief Information Officer Steven VanRoekel says the government will eliminate 378 domains and merge an additional 65 domains with existing websites.
This sprawl also creeps into the area of web governance, according to the report. Fifty percent of the agencies surveyed had two to nine different web content management systems for maintaining sites. For example, the Health and Human Services Department reported 19 different WCMs and 32 different web service providers.
For now, it appears the governmentwide consolidation effort is focused on the agency level. The U.K. government recently consolidated all its federal websites down to two domains, noted VanRoekel. "I don't know if that's right for everyone," he said during a Dec. 16 event in Washington, D.C. Read the full article on FierceGovernmentIT.
