EMC updates Documentum Media WorkSpace

EMC has announced a new version of its Documentum Media WorkSpace digital asset management product that adds new image, video, audio and presentation management features; collaborative social media features, including the ability to capture comments; and a personal dashboard to track an individual's information.

The announcement wasn't a huge surprise, as EMC has been showing it around for quite some time, said Alan Pelz-Sharpe, principal analyst and director for The Real Story Group. "I don't think this really differentiates them in the digital asset management space," he said. "There's a lot of nice niche players doing interesting work, and this just keeps EMC up to speed with the others. It doesn't put them ahead." While it would certainly be on the short list for an existing Documentum customer, it wouldn't necessarily make Documentum more attractive otherwise, he said.

The software is the primary user interface for EMC Documentum Brand Management Solution. It is built using Adobe (NASDAQ: ADBE) Flex, which, as Pelz-Sharpe wrote in a blog post last year, some people take issue with on standardized technology grounds.

EMC refused to provide any pricing information on the product, which is available now, but Pelz-Sharpe expected a typical installation to start at $100,000 and up.
