EMC SourceOne introduces two file management tools

EMC announced two new members of the growing SourceOne family of products this week with SourceOne File Intelligence and SourceOne for File Systems. The former provides the means to generate automated policy-based archiving (something all companies should be looking at), while the latter provides insight into unstructured files to help organizations figure out what's important.

While many companies realize they should be getting a better grip on the growing amount of digital information stored inside their organizations too few are actually doing it. These tools have the potential to give them a fighting chance to find the important stuff and add an element of automation to move files that you need to keep for business, regulatory or whatever reasons into archived storage.

Brian Babineau, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group says tools like these are needed into today's enterprise. “According to our research, the number one information governance and management challenge is using several individual processes and tools to enforce policies across different content types." He believes these products can solve that by giving the enterprise access to more file types than these tools typically monitor, which usually only cover email and SharePoint.

Whether these tools provide the answers to these issues is not clear yet, but they have the potential to extend governance beyond the typical file types and that certainly sounds like a positive step.
