EMC released its awaited iPad app this week, which it had previously announced at the EMC World customer conference back in May. The iPad app is available for Documentum licensees in the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) App Store.

As EMC sees it, users are increasingly looking for a variety of ways to access content. Once upon a time, users simply accessed content from their desktop PCs at work and that was it. But as users increasingly work on a variety of mobile devices including tablets and smart phones, enterprise software vendors such as Documentum have had to provide access to content on mobile devices.

With over 28 million iPads sold to date, it's a hard device for any company to ignore and EMC wisely developed a Documentum app for iPad.

The hope, according to Rohit Ghai, vice president and general manager of EMC's Content and Case Management Group, is to provide as many ways as practically possible to let customers use Documentum tools.

"Organizations can now realize a higher return on their investment through increased end user adoption of content and case management solutions," he said in a statement.

Melissa Webster, program vice president for Content and Digital Media Technologies at IDC says she has seen tablet use in the enterprise explode--especially for certain groups such as executives and sales teams. These users need a way to access the Documentum repository from these devices.

"All of these users need access to their content--and to the enterprise repository that manages that content--in a seamless, easy-to-use way that nonetheless provides comprehensive security to safeguard the enterprise's intellectual property and most confidential information," she said.

The app will be available this week.
