EMC recently announced a new set of e-Discovery tools they call SourceOne. Hoping to capitalize on the growing e-Discovery market, they have created a set of components to deal with email and data collection, which uses archiving as the core technology to help organizations understand and track information through its lifecycle.

The email solution was built from the ground up reports Sheila Childs, director of product marketing for SourceOne at EMC, and it replaces the long-time email archiving solution called EmailXtender. Childs says it's been designed to deal with the growing volume of email and to scale according the needs of the organization.

The second piece, called Discovery Manager, lets organizations manage the email archive to identify, collect and build a legal hold as needed, and tag and export emails within the email archive. Childs explained that this piece has been designed with the legal investigator in mind who needs to produce a subset of the archive for a legal discovery request.

The final piece is the Discovery Collector, which Childs says has been designed to identify and collect information from what she calls "the wilds" of the desktops and laptops. She indicated the first release will not reach mobile devices.

The components have been designed to integrate with any CMS, providing a set of tools that can stand alone outside of the EMC family if that's what your organization requires. The components give the customer the opportunity to pick and choose what they need, but it seems that implementing a comprehensive system would require you to go with all three pieces.
