Day releases open source version of CRX development environment

Day software announced this week that they were releasing an open source version of the CRX development environment as part of a multi-pronged approach to CRX licensing. CRX is Day's commercial implementation of Apache Jackrabbit and Apache sling for building web applications. In fact, Day's own commercial content management product CQ5 is built on top of CRX.

Kevin Cochrane, Days' Chief Marketing Officer, says this approach enables developers to download the package, get comfortable with it and build an initial project without incurring any costs. Cochrane explains that previously, the CRX licensing model didn't fit the needs of most developers, who prefer to download a tool and see if it works for them without incurring any upfront investment and without dealing with a sales person.

Cochrane says for small developers and students, there is actually no further obligation, but companies that have a maintenance component as part of company IT policy can sign up for a maintenance contract with Day for $18,500 per year, but only after the application has been fully tested and deployed.

If the customer likes developing with CRX and builds up a stable of individual projects, at that point a sales person could approach the CIO about a single cost unlimited maintenance deal. This approach makes a lot of sense because it plays to the way that developers do their work and interact with software and it enables students and smaller businesses to get familiar with CRX and build a community of users who understand and use the product.
