Content management goes mobile
Jarrod Gingras of CMS Watch has an interesting post this week about the changing ways we use content. He points out that many of us are getting our information on mobile devices. That's no secret, but what we are seeing is that more and more content management vendors are recognizing this and trying to accommodate the move to mobile.
There is nothing more aggravating, when using your cell phone to access a website, than to find that your site has not been tuned for the small screen. It makes it almost impossible to work even on a screen as "large" as the one on the iPhone. Recently, I arrived at Penn Station in New York and found that my train had a long delay. I went to the Amtrak site on my iPhone and was pleased to discover they had a mobile version of the site, that made it easy to look for another train. Unfortunately, there wasn't one, but I gave kudos to Amtrak for making it easy for me to find out.
When I was at Enterprise 2.0 in Boston, Open Text showed off their iPhone app, which enables users to access content from anywhere, log on securely and access content, calendars and collaboration spaces, all in an application specifically tuned to the small screen. Many others have or will soon follow suit as more and more employees carry smartphones in their pockets or purses. The way we access and use content is changing before our very eyes and vendors are clearly starting to pay attention. As Gingras points out, we should be seeing more mobile versions of enterprise applications in the next year.
