Content management and compliance

The issue of compliance is one part careful interpretation and one part voodoo. It's complicated by the fact that some regulations neatly lay out what's expected, while others are so vague that anyone who tells you they offer a perfect compliance solution is doing a bit of wishful hand-waving.

Companies such as Hyperwave and Revize both try to offer CMS solutions to those with compliance needs. Whether or not you would actually be covered if an auditor turned their focus to you is a matter of how closely the product's features map to the regulations, and whether the company's interpretation of the regulations matches those of the auditor.

If stringent compliance needs have you considering such a solution, be sure to go over the regulations with a professional and determine how they apply to your particular situation. Use that knowledge to decide what your compliance requirements are, and then evaluate all potential options by that list, whether you're looking at CMSs specifically designed with compliance in mind or not.

You may find that the compliance-focused product is perfect for you. Or, you may discover that a simpler offering with a few select modules is just right.
