Content-friendly features in OSX Lion
In case you missed it, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) held its annual World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) keynote yesterday and tucked in the announcement were some new features in the coming upgrade to OSX, known as Lion, that should appeal to those of us who produce content on a regular basis.
One of the advantages of using Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) Docs and other cloud word processors is that it continually saves your work. Well, Lion is going to do that now with Auto Save. Along the same lines, you can now access any version of those saved documents and even copy and paste between versions.
Sometimes a document gets changed so much, you forget what the original was like. Using an interface that was described to look like Apple's Time Machine interface, Versions creates a list of your documents moving back in time through a star field with a timeline listed along the right side. You can click on any version to open it, find that brilliant phrase that had been edited out and put it back in place.
This could be a double-edged sword for some users, who might be putting stuff back that was taken out for a reason, or who might get confused about which is the most current version, but overall it seems like a great feature for content developers. It also provides a clear audit trail of all changes for those who need such things for legal (or just covering your butt) reasons.
Another nice feature is the ability to send files to another machine on the same wireless network using the new Air Drop feature. Think of this as mindless networking. Users still have to confirm the receipt of the file, but you can use the OSX Finder to see a list of people with whom you can share files, then simply drag and drop the file on their picture and you're done. No more emailing or sharing files via Skype.
This probably just scratches the surface of ways content producers can use Lion to manage and share documents more effectively, but with 250 new features, only nine of which they showed off yesterday, this should at least whet your appetite.
