Box.net lands former EMC CMO Whitney Tidmarsh
Box.net was full of good news today. Not only did they just release outstanding quarterly numbers, they announced the hiring of former EMC CMO Whitney Tidmarsh.
Last month, Tidmarsh announced she was leaving EMC after 15 years with the company and at the time she made it clear she missed the days when Documentum was a small company. With Box.net, she has landed a growing company with big ambitions to simplify content management in the enterprise and make it easier for end users and administrators to deal with content management issues.
Today, Box.net is really just at the beginning of that journey, but by bringing a seasoned pro like Tidmarsh on board to be Enterprise General Manager, the company is proving it's serious about becoming a major player in the enterprise content management space.
It reminds me of the baseball manager who joins a team with a strong core of young players, knowing that the team is on the upswing. By the same token, Tidmarsh is joining a growing company but one that will benefit greatly from her experience and understanding of the enterprise market.
Today's announcement also included good news for last quarter with growth all around. There was $48 million in venture funding in February. What's more their enterprise revenue grew 3x over Q1 last year and they boasted a 25 percent increase in overall average deal size from Q4 last year.
Box.net had a coming out party of sorts last month at AIIM/info360 with a huge booth in the center of the floor. They were continually cited as an example of cloud content management, yet as a company they still have a long way to go and need to walk a fine line between the simplicity they try to sell and the functionality that larger companies are going to demand.
Trying to be simple, while layering on functionality is seemingly incongruent, but having Tidmarsh help lead them to the next step could help. It will be interesting to watch the company begin to make the transition from new-guy start-up to a more mature operation.
