Last week, Box.net introduced a new tool called SimpleShare that lets you capture screens and save them to your Box.net account automatically. You can also move files to your Box.net online account by dragging and dropping them on to the SimpleShare folder.

There are versions for Mac and PC. I tested the Mac version, which is available in the Mac App store. Once you download it, you log in to your Box.net account and you can begin to use the tool.

The screen capture part of the program worked without a hitch. You can capture a full screen or part of a screen and the file gets saved to your SimpleShare folder on Box.net as a .png file where you can work with it as you could any file on Box by sharing it, assigning a task or collaborating on it.

The tool also includes the ability to record the actions on the screen, which is really just a very simple tool where you draw the region you want to record, do your thing, and click the Stop Recording button. The file is uploaded automatically to your SimpleShare folder on Box.net.

In addition to the screen capture and shooting capability, you can drag files from your system onto the Box icon in your tool bar and it provides an easy and handy way to transfer files to your Box.net account.

Conceptually, it's an interesting idea, but it seems a bit rushed to this point. You can capture a screen with pre-defined hot keys, but you can't define a hot key yourself, which seems to be a simple enough feature to add. It might be also nice to be able to change the default screen capture format and maybe have a bit more control in the screen recorder. I'm also surprised that you can't go directly to your Box account in the browser from this tool.

SimpleShare is available immediately.
