Akamai-SafeNet partnership could benefit software vendors

Software companies looking for a secure way to sell software online have a new option this week, thanks to a partnership between Akamai and SafeNet. Akamai provides content delivery services under the auspices of its Electronic Software Delivery solution, while SafeNet provides a secure licensing platform for software vendors.

Using Akamai's Content Delivery Network (CDN), customers can deliver large packages without worrying about over-burdening their own networks. SafeNet focuses on order entry, fulfillment and managing the licensing agreement between the software vendor and the purchaser. What's more, Akamai provides a way for vendors to collect valuable information about the transaction using sophisticated web analytics.

SafeNet VP of software rights management, Chris Holland believes this will lead to a better experience for the customers of both companies. "The core business value of Sentinel EMS is the system’s ability to reduce the cost and complexity of software fulfillment management for software vendors through automation. Similarly, Akamai’s industry-leading solutions have demonstrated unmatched global scale and reliability that significantly reduce software delivery costs."

If this works as advertised, it should give software vendors a safe, secure way to distribute software over the Internet. And given the amount of software piracy we hear about, it could help increase the amount of legal software being distributed.
