Adobe InContext Editing 1.5 lets users edit directly on the site
Adobe introduced an update to Adobe InContext Editing this week, a unique tool that enables users to make edits to a website directly in the browser without affecting the underlying page design and without using a traditional web content management system. Users simply open a browser, navigate to the Adobe InContext Editing application--note that it requires the latest version of Flash--then enter the URL, and click the Edit button.
The page becomes editable and the user can see which sections of the screen are editable, and can make text changes or add a link to another website. It makes it simple for even non-technical end users to make changes directly on the website without having to use a content management system or an editor.
Adobe has had a desktop program for several years called Contribute that provides similar functionality, but the difference with InContext Editing is that it provides this functionality as an online service in a browser without having to install any additional software. Contribute also has more sophisticated functionality. InContext Editing just allows users to make basic changes.
For a web designer who is looking to provide a way for clients to make minor changes to websites without having to make a call to the designer for every change, this program could be a real benefit.
If you want to try it, go to the InContext Editing website and click the "Try a Demo" button to see it in action.
