Ten Content Management Predictions for 2009

None of us can see into the future, so predictions, while a fun exercise, don't really amount to much. Still, it wouldn't be a new year without some predictions, so why should we be different here at FierceContentManagement. Here's our attempt at predicting the future:

1. Increased interest in cloud computing

In a down economy, companies looking for ways to make major purchases like a CMS, while keeping an eye on the bottom line, will take a long look at cloud computing solutions. The beauty of the cloud is that it eliminates the infrastructure costs and greatly simplifies setup and maintenance.

2. More regulatory compliance

After the federal government handed out a boat load of money to the failing financial services companies last fall, the writing was on the wall that regulatory compliance would increase. While it's still not clear exactly how that will play out, it is highly likely that the next Congress will enact stricter record keeping regulations in exchange for all that cash, and that could translate into new business for ECM companies.

Ron, I thought your comments were pretty much on-target. However, I would add one other prediction: the continuing movement toward Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions. Perhaps you are including SaaS in the "cloud computing" bucket, but there is no doubt many companies want to explore a low-cost, fast-to-deploy and architecturally sound content management platform that provides proven benefits.

Ron, I agree with Chris Ryan, here in Brasil we are working and looking for get more deals with SaaS

Yes, absolutely I tend to think of SaaS and cloud computing as being synonymous. And don't worry we will be covering this plenty in the coming year. I find the approach that SpringCM is taking to be quite interesting and I plan on interviewing Dan Carmel very soon for a One on one interview.

Thanks to both of you for your comments.

Hi Ron,

I think we will also see significant traction in tying content management and community solutions into Facebook Connect or Google Open social.

This will allow customers to leverage existing content and connections while tapping the power of word of mouth. The question companies need to now ask is: “How do I extend the reach of digital assets and the vibrancy of your community to social networks that already exist?”

Hey Dirk
Excellent point and I think you have to include LinkedIn with that, which just cut a big deal with IBM. Having access to your external social network from inside the firewall is going to be an ongoing trend.

Thanks for commenting.

Hey Ron,

I agree, here is a blogpost I wrote called "Give your content wings" where I describe the opportunity that exist at the intersection of content and conversation. tinyurl.com/cb242l
