SDL made back to back purchases in mid-July. The first summer purchase was for XML editor, Xopus. The company's browser-based editor was aimed to help non-technical XML reviewers contribute, edit and comment within Xopus.

At the time, Gilbane Group's Mary LaPlante said it was a smart purchase by SDL. "Companies can wring more value out of XML content when it's accessible to functions like customer self-service, eCommerce, and R&D. This is good news for XML advocates within the enterprise who have long struggled to communicate its value to peer groups and executives," said LaPlante.

In less than two weeks SDL was back at it, with the acquisition of statistical machine translation company Language Weaver Inc. for $42.5 million in cash. SDL said it would keep selling the existing SDL Enterprise Translation Server, which uses rules-based machine translation technology, and which SDL said complements the statistical approach used by Language Weaver. The purchase also gave SDL an edge in accessing the government market.
