5. It's the economy, stupid

There can be little doubt that economic problems will ripple into 2009, just as the economy was felt in the last half of 2008. How this will play out is anyone's guess, but it could have an impact on short-term spending and budgeting. It's something that all software companies, especially content management companies, have to watch out for in order to continue making these systems valuable parts of the business software infrastructure.

6. Open source will thrive

See number 5. As the economy continues to be an issue, it only makes sense that companies are going to look for lower cost alternatives. Open source doesn't mean free, but it does mean significantly lower costs, in comparison to high licensing fees. I see more people looking at open source in 2009.
