FatWire [1] delivered the first product to come from its partnership [2] with EMC [3] last week, a two-way connector that enables companies to govern web content using EMC content governance tools. While FatWire previously had a connector that enabled FatWire customers using Documentum [3] to access and use content inside the Documentum repository, this new connector provides two-way communication so that all FatWire content can get pulled into the Documentum repository where companies can apply workflow, governance rules and retention policies for the web content.
Kathleen Reidy, an analyst at The 451 Group [4] says providing this type of retention for web content has become increasingly important to companies. She says products like this one from FatWire will help them reach this goal. "Offerings in this area will enable marketing and line-of-business teams to meet business needs for web content oversight and business policy compliance."
Apoorv Durga from the Real Story Group [5] agrees it's a positive development, but is concerned that the new tool could end up resulting in redundant content in the repository "Overall, it would be good for customers that are common to [FatWire and EMC] and need to apply retention policies on web content. However, they should know that the web content from Fatwire is 'copied' over to Documentum which means the content now is duplicated and that could have its own implications especially in a compliance scenario."
EMC-FatWire customers looking for a way to govern web content should welcome this product, but they may want to keep Durga's caveat in mind.
