Nuxeo [1] last week announced Nuxeo Studio, a configuration tool designed to help Nuxeo subscription customers create customized versions of Nuxeo Enterprise, Nuxeo Document Management and Nuxeo Digital Asset Management.
By providing a graphical administrative tool, Nuxeo is hoping to simplify the installation, configuration and customization of their products, while adding value to the current lineup of subscription services. Most Open Source companies like Nuxeo give away the product for free. They make money through a subscription model that provides customers with regular updates and access to maintenance and support. Nuxeo Studio provides a concrete tool as a selling point over and above these other services.
Camille Pinet, Project Manager at IGN France International, a geographic engineering company and Nuxeo customer, says the new product has helped them implement new installations faster. "Nuxeo Studio is allowing us to customize Nuxeo ECM quickly in-house without developers. We've been able to skip some time-consuming steps, which has greatly sped up development of our document management application. Nuxeo Studio also gives us closer control of any customizations and much faster turn-around on overall development," she said.
Cheryl McKinnon, chief marketing officer at Nuxeo, wrote in a blog post last week that the tool actually aligns the customer and company needs because it gives Nuxeo a revenue source (the subscriber) and gives the subscriber the tools and services it needs to to implement the product successfully.
It's hard to know if it aligns quite that well for everyone all of the time, but her point his taken. Open Source software provides customers with the tools it needs without costly licensing fees. In the Nuxeo model, the customer gets services and Nuxeo Studio to help it implement Nuxeo's solution optimally. It's never easy implementing an enterprise content management system, but this tool is clearly designed to help customers do just that.
