Box.net [1] started out as a simple way to share files in the cloud, or as an ftp replacement, but recently it has added social tools to enable a team to work together in a virtual environment. In addition, a recent partnership with Federal Express enables customers to send files for printing (FedEx owns Kinkos [2]), then have the finished product shipped to wherever they are going. This would have been a huge boon for me when I was in publications production in the 1980's. For today's businesses it provides an online space to work together.
They offer a free version for up to 1 gig of storage and are also available as a LinkedIn [3] tool. They also have individual and organization paid versions of the product with more storage.
In this interview, conducted at the Enterprise 2.0 Conference [4] in Boston this week, I asked Grant to discuss how tools like hers are contributing to knowledge sharing inside an organization:
